DRAMA: Friday 30 March
Quite often ‘drama’ is used as simply the default definition for anything that doesn’t fit within a more convention-based genre. Notoriously difficult to market, new writers in particular are often dissuaded from writing dramas. Yet dramas are the most truthful of genres, allowing writers to explore all the wonderful contradictory complexities of human behaviour: the lies we tell ourselves and other people, the fears we try to ignore, the shame we carry and the dreams we secretly harbour. Plus dramas most often win the big awards! This one-day workshop specifically explores drama stories that deal with ordinary human predicaments, be that the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage, an unwanted pregnancy, a struggle to make ends meet or an old-fashioned mid-life crisis. We will examine how to give such small personal stories a big screen treatment that will strike a chord with its intended audience.
